Awards announced at the ICC Jubilee Luncheon 2015

Fengcheng Wang, Stanley Cauvain, Jan Willem van der Kamp, Meinolf G. Lindhauer and Michaela Pichler contributed to the programme at the ICC Jubilee Luncheon 2015 on the occasion of the 3rd ICC Latin American Cereal Conference (LACC3) in Curitiba, Brazil on 31 March 2015. Fellowship of the ICC Academy:

Cereal scientists, technologists and other individuals deemed to have made significant contributions to cereal science and the aims and objectives of the ICC can be awarded by appointment as Fellow of the ICC Academy.

Fred BrounsProf. Dr. Fred Brouns, Maastricht University, Netherlands

Professor Brouns was praised in particular for his wide range and continuing activities in providing science based replies - in publications, social media activities and new research projects - to the many myths and fancy stories about the unhealthiness of wheat and gluten.

 

ICC Honorary President:

Cereal scientists may be awarded as ICC Honorary Presidents in recognition of contributions to ICC and to international cereal science and technology.

Professor Taylor was awarded for his continued contributions to the aims and ideals of ICC, going far beyond ICC's Presidential duties.

 

Harald Perten Prize:

The Harald Perten Prize is rewarded for outstanding achievements in science, research, teaching or transmission of knowledge, which serve cereal sciences and technology.

Professor León - as leading cereal scientist in Latin America - was awarded for his major achievements in research, teaching and enhancing wide collaborations in Latin America and Spain.

Professor Delcour was awarded for his impressive achievements in cereal science, including fundamental studies and applications in the area of enzymes, and in teaching. He will receive the award later this year.

Forty-eight speakers from all corners of the globe (Austria, Ethiopia, France, Ireland, Italy, Jordan, Mexico, Morocco, Netherlands, Philippines, Poland, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Switzerland, Togo, Turkey, United States and Zimbabwe) will deliver outstanding speeches within eight scientific sessions on hot topics in sustainability, economics and trading, health and nutrition, authenticity, safety and processing.

The Italian Association for Cereal Science and Technology (AISTEC) and the International Association for Cereal Science and Technology (ICC) will co-organise an international conference on Grains for feeding the world on the occasion of the EXPO 2015 in Milan, Italy.

The Scientific Committees, made up by well-known scientists and experts worldwide, will shape up a rich and interesting programme touching on innovative aspects concerning all cereals, pseudocereals and other grains. A poster session will complement oral presentations together with a Table Top Exhibition.

Letter from the outgoing ICC President 2014 - Joel Abecassis

Dear Colleagues, dear friends,

Arriving at the end of my term as ICC President, I would like to thank you all for your help and your support during this period with special thanks to the ICC Headquarters (HQ) staff who have worked hard to reach out to our members and realizing the Association's aims. Our objectives to develop an association that is represented globally as well as to bring more services to its members have been pursued during these last two years. New members (corporates, countries and institutions) have joined our organisation. Among them, three new countries, India, Brazil and New Zealand are now part of ICC and they will actively contribute to our future activities. In April 2015 Brazil will host the 3rd ICC Latin American conference. This meeting will also mark the 60th anniversary of our Association.

Report of the ICC Luncheon 2014 in Providence (Rhode Island), USA, 8 October 2014

Some 50 friends of ICC attended the ICC Luncheon 2014 at the AACCI Annual Meeting in Providence, USA on 8 October 2014. Joel Abecassis, Roland Poms, Jan Willem van der Kamp, Fengcheng Wang, Bob Cracknell and Jan Delcour contributed to the programme at the 2014 ICC Luncheon. Report of the 2014 Rice International Conference, 24-27 November 2014, NPUST, Pingtung, Taiwan

The 2014 RICE International Conference held from 24 to 27 November 2014 was organised by CGPRDI - China Grain Products Research and Development Institute and NPUST - National Pingtung University of Science and Technology and co-organised by ICC. 174 experts and participants from 12 countries discussed the current knowledge and research about rice and related rice industry in Pingtung, Taiwan.

The core of this conference was "from staple to innovation". There were 8 main topics discussed in this conference:

  • Food security and rice production,
  • Rice breeding and agricultural practices to meet processing and product requirements,
  • Processing of rice - from milling to food manufacturing,
  • Innovation and development of products based on rice flour,
  • Nutrition and health aspects of rice and rice products,
  • Utilization of all fractions of rice kernel,
  • Rice authenticity and safety, and
  • Rice and public health - addressing the consumer and using market opportunity.

There were 23 oral presentations and 49 poster presentations in the conference.

PRESS RELEASE: ICC congratulates Prof. Hamit Köksel to his election as ICC President Elect 2015-2016

Hamit KökselIn the elections for ICC Officials from 12 to 26 October 2014, Prof. Hamit Köksel from Hacettepe University, Ankara, Turkey received the majority of votes. Prof. Köksel will become ICC President Elect 2015-2016 and succeed Prof. Fengcheng Wang from China as ICC President in 2017-2018. Prof. Hamit Köksel has been connected with ICC for many years and he has been ICC National Delegate since 2002. With Prof. Köksel as incoming President ICC will benefit from his international, diplomatic and scientific experience. Besides, he is the organiser of the next (15th) ICC Cereal and Bread Congress in Istanbul, Turkey, in 2016.

The issue contains 8 review articles, 2 research articles, as well as a foreword by Michele Suman and Roland Poms, the guest editors of this special edition. The articles contain a clear overview of the latest developments, products, and concerns on use of these fast and easy detection methods. Free EU funded Connect4Action workshop on "Better Communication during the Food Innovation Process"

As partner of the EU funded project Connect4Action, ICC would like to draw your attention to a free workshop for young scientists and PhD students.

We are glad to announce our upcoming intensive academic training on Better Communication during the Food Innovation Process, funded under the European project Connect4Action (C4A, www.connect4action.eu), that will be held in Brussels (Belgium) on Thursday 30 and Friday 31 October 2014, in the Sofitel Hotel.

This short training course is oriented towards young academics, in particular PhD students, from any EU country and will be delivered by a multidisciplinary group of lecturers from a range of international institutions and companies (University of Wageningen, University of Newcastle, University of Bologna, MAPP-Aarhus Business School, EFFoST, TNO, EUFIC).

We offer a full-time position based in attractive, well-equipped government offices situated in the central business district of Vienna, Austria. This is a senior position and a competitive salary commensurate with the experience of the candidate will be negotiated (minimum 51,100.- and maximum 85,000.- € gross per year).

The position involves association management (administrative and financial), fund raising, developing and implementing members services, coordination of committees and working groups, project management and monitoring, event management/coordination, and overseeing communication and publication of website content, news items and scientific articles.
